A smartphone’s design should be your least priority, especially on this price range. And besides, since it already has a higher price tag, the Redmi 9 is obviously better-looking than the 9A.
The triple cameras and fingerprint scanner on the back are placed in the middle of a circular design accent. The front is then protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, while the glass used on the front of the Redmi 9A was not mentioned, so we suspect its inferior.
On the other hand, the Redmi 9A has a slightly boring look as it only has a single camera on the back. Although, it has a vertical stripe on the far left that adjacents to the camera and the Redmi logo on the bottom as an aesthetic touch.
Both devices have plastic back panels. The Redmi 9 has a more attractive color gradient design, with a shiny glass-like look. On the other hand, the Redmi 9A is available in plain colors, with a matte texture that’s anti-fingerprint.
Both devices have a similar size of about 6.53-inches, giving you enough for multitasking, gaming, and watching videos.
However, the price premium on the Redmi 9 was allocated on its sharper FHD+ resolution. On the other hand, the Redmi 9A only has an HD+ screen.
The MediaTek Helio G80 on the Redmi 9 can handle your Zoom meetings, online classes, PDFs, and document reading/writing, and more. It’s also capable enough to handle most games smoothly.
It’s available in 3GB/4GB of RAM, which will help squeeze more power out of the processor than the 2GB memory of the 9A.
Meanwhile, the MediaTek Helio G25 on the Redmi 9A should be enough to handle all your work and school-related tasks. Although you have to settle at the lowest graphics settings when playing triple-A games.

The 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the Redmi 9A is usable enough for video calls and online classes. It also comes with a single 13-megapixel rear camera for taking casual snaps.
But with the Redmi 9, you’re getting a sharper 8-megapixel selfie camera. Plus, three extra cameras on the back that consists of an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel macro, and a 2-megapixel sensor.
Would you need these extra cameras for school? Possibly not. But they are there to justify the more expensive price tag.
Both the Redmi 9 and 9A have similar battery capacities, with the former only slightly higher at 5,020mAh.
The two also come with 10W fast chargers on the box. Although, the Redmi 9 gives you an option to use an 18W charger if you purchase one separately.
The Redmi 9A already offers a set of features that’s enough for online learning. It has a decent selfie camera for video calls, a large battery that can last for an entire day or two, and a capable processor that can handle other school-related tasks. The best part is, it’s only available for Php4,690
But if you can stretch your budget a bit more — by about Php2,300 — you can get the Redmi 9 for a starting price of Php6,990. By doing so, you’re getting a more powerful processor for playing games, better cameras, a fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C, and 18W fast charging support.
