Smart may have recently launched its 5G service, but it hasn’t forgotten to improve the coverage and quality of service of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

Noting the doubled mobile traffic—amounting to 1.3 exabytes—in the first half of 2020 when compared to the same period of the previous year, Smart has added more LTE base stations by 10% since the end of 2019. The company is also reassigning its 1,800 MHz frequency from 2G to 4G/LTE.

With 3,785 base stations, Smart claims it so far has 91% of municipalities and 94% population coverage nationwide. Even remote areas such as Sulu and Northern Samar have been covered to support the higher, pandemic-caused demand.

Enhancements on the 4G will also serve as preparation for Smart to deploy 5G in more areas. For this year, Smart’s gradual 5G rollout includes areas in Metro Manila, to be followed by other urban centers the following year.
