Starlink, the brainchild of Elon Musk at SpaceX, just keeps getting better. Recently, one of its subscribers reported that the satellite-based Internet service provider was able to deliver 200 Mbps in download speed.
The subscriber, who hails from Sonoma County, California, was able to experience such game-changing speed in one of his speed tests—something that we Filipinos might also enjoy should Converge ICT and SpaceX reach a deal.
But the 200 Mbps breach was more of a fluke. Per the user’s other speed test results, Starlink’s internet service went as low as 44 Mbps. In October 2020, SpaceX itself disclosed to the Federal Communications Commission in the US that its internet service would provide an average speed of 80Mbps. That average was a drastic increase from the 43 Mbps that Starlink reported in September.
For comparison, other satellite-based Internet services in the US have average download speeds of 25 Mbps. Meanwhile, the average download speeds in the Philippines according to the February 2021 Speedtest Global Index are 26.24 Mbps and 38.46 Mbps for mobile and fixed broadband, respectively.
