PLDT chief executive officer Manuel V. Pangilinan has announced that its subsidiary satellite television company Cignal is launching a new broadband service on May 15.

Per MVP’s tweet, the broadband service is based on Cignal’s satellite technology and aims to provide coverage nationwide. No price schemes or prepaid/postpaid plans have been revealed.

The new service promises Internet service to be available everywhere. It’s expected to be similar to the service launched by Smart in December 2020, which tapped Cignal’s very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) technology.

With VSAT, Smart (and soon Cignal) can provide broadband services to far-flung areas where land-based Internet solutions are not viable.

Some areas of the Philippines that already take advantage of VSAT-based Internet services include Palawan and Tawi-Tawi. In relation, the Department of Information and Communications Technology has also deployed free Wi-Fi in remote islands in Mindanao via VSAT.

Cignal, in partnership with Meralco, previously launched a fiber Internet service called Red Broadband late last year.

As for competitor Globe Telecom, it announced in March a new partnership with Curvalux to provide low-cost fixed wireless broadband solutions for remote areas.
