Late last month, the Indian government banned 59 apps from China. And now the crackdown has continued with 47 more Chinese apps added to India’s ban list, citing data privacy and security concerns.
An official list of these 47 apps is yet to be released. However, several of the newly banned apps are either clones and iterations or made by the same companies behind the previous 59 apps, according to officials from India’s IT ministry. These include Tiktok Lite and SHAREit Lite.
Based on recent reports, up to 275 more other Chinese apps are also being scrutinized and could face a ban. One of these apps include the battle royale shooter game PUBG Mobile, which is published by Chinese conglomerate Tencent. Apps developed by Xiaomi also face a potential ban.
Border tensions between China and India, cited as another factor in India’s decision to ban Chinese-made apps, have yet to de-escalate despite diplomatic talks.
