A report from Check Point Research reveals that hackers can exploit the Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem (MSM) to record phone calls and more.

The MSM has been around since the early ’90s and is being used on 2G, 3G, 4G, and even the latest 5G devices. However, it’s apparently vulnerable as it can be hacked remotely just by sending an SMS message.

Once hacked, cybercriminals can listen to phone calls, read text messages, and even unlock SIM cards to bypass limitations posed by carriers.

What’s worse, 30% of all smartphones are potential targets of this issue as Qualcomm chipsets power them.

The best you can do is make sure you always update to the latest security patches.

In a statement given to Tom’s Guide, Qualcomm already seeded a software update to fix the MSM issue in December 2020. Additional patches have been rolled out to ensure the issue is fixed. Albeit, no official Android security bulletin has mentioned this fix.
