A resolution, which has been recently filed in Congress, recommends the government to temporarily use vacant TV and radio frequencies of ABS-CBN for distance learning.

Filed by the Congress’ Deputy Speaker and Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative Luis Raymund Villafuerte, the House Resolution No. 1044 recommends the “temporary use by the government of ABS-CBN’s former television and radio frequencies for effective distance learning, instruction, training and other useful purposes to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on education in the Philippines.”

The resolution also states that it plans to exhaust all possible delivery modes such as the use of untapped television and radio frequencies as those vacated by ABS-CBN to keep students engaged; that internet connectivity and possession of a laptop pose a variety of challenges for teachers and learners; and that the unused frequencies may also be used for information on COVID-19 prevention and control, risk-reduction and preparedness.

The resolution was filed days after the Congress voted no for the franchise renewal of the TV network.
